Children’s Eye Exams

Request Appointment

Children develop at a fast pace, and are constantly growing and changing. Their vision does the same: as children learn new life skills and knowledge, they continually depend on clear and quality vision to take them to their next milestone.

When conducting a comprehensive eye exam for any child, we focus not only on checking for healthy development but also on educating families on ocular health. This helps to ensure that you’re ready to aid your child’s development between visits to the optometrist.

It is imperative that your child has their eyes examined at least once a year, usually beginning around 6 months old. This solidifies our ability to monitor your child’s ocular health and better detect any problems, should they arise.

Remember, children may not notice or express vision problems in the same way adults would. It is our responsibility to make sure they are on the best path of development possible. We know that trips to the doctor can cause apprehension, so we ensure a calm and friendly environment to best serve your family.

During Your Child’s Eye Exam

We Address…

  • Patient and family medical history. This information gives us the best possible idea of the scope of care your child may need. It will also help us to determine if there are genetic risk factors or whether more specialized testing is required.
  • Tests for visual acuity, binocular vision, and refraction. These look for issues with sight, eye teaming and focusing abilities, near or farsightedness, and whether a prescription is needed. These tests are all adjusted based on the age and communication level of the child.
  • Overall eye health. We conduct tests to determine your child’s overall ocular health and look for abnormalities that could indicate problems such as eye diseases.
  • The best vision correction solution if needed. These could include treatments such as glasses, contact lenses, and/or vision therapy.
  • Nutritional and physical activity plans to maintain excellent ocular development and well-being.
  • How to protect your child’s vision when it comes to day-to-day activities such as sports, sun exposure, and usage of digital devices.
  • Any other questions or concerns you may have.

Please bring your child’s health care card and insurance information, as well as information about any health issues they may have and medications they are taking. If they have any current eyewear, please bring it as well.
